A large gallery display of photographs is an attractive mode to infuse whatsoever room with warmth and style.

Since I dearest taking pictures (especially of my daughters) and had a large unused wall, I wanted to create a striking photo display but wasn't sure exactly how to do information technology and reach the outcome I was looking for.

So, I did a whole bunch of research on the all-time ways to display photos on a wall and compiled what I learned here for the benefit of others, like me, who accept lots of pictures but waiting to be hung on a big empty wall.

Bones Principles of Arranging a Photograph Wall Brandish

Information technology sounds simple: Merely identify your favorite pictures in frames of different sizes and shapes and hang them in a mosaic pattern. There are, even so, some general guidelines that volition help brand your wall look especially beautiful.

  • Frames should hang at eye level (slightly above five anxiety from the floor). Hang them a fiddling chip higher if you have loftier ceilings (or a very alpine family unit).
  • Help the display come together by using like photograph styles (i.e. black-and-white or sepia), frames, or mat colour. Don't be afraid to contrast. For instance, if yous're using all black-and-white photos, utilise frames of varying textures and sizes to add some pizzazz.
  • Some interesting but simple arrangements include diamond or rectangular shapes. You might desire to choose one that will be easy to add to until yous've formed an overall shape that works for you.
  • If you're short on space, consider collage or multi-picture frames. With this type of frame, you're able to artfully brandish many photos in a small-scale amount of infinite. Many options exist in this category and you can easily find both hanging and tabletop designs.
  • A dandy hanging kit can work wonders in helping to easily and efficiently complete your photo wall display!

What You'll Need

Before you first, you lot'll need the following:

  • Laser level or push pins and thread (for keeping the frames directly)
  • Newspaper and pair of scissors (optional)

How to Start Creating the Photo Wall of Your Dreams

  1. Make up one's mind what kind of look you lot're going for—sleek, homey, whimsical, cocked, etc.
  2. Choose the pictures y'all want to feature. It might help to start out with more than than you need and then narrow down based on space, mood, or fit.
  3. Before putting any nails in the wall, lay the frames on the basis and play with different arrangements to see how they'll look. Commencement at the center and work outwards. For example, if you're going for a rectangular expect, cull your wall, and so place three identical size frames in the eye to establish a focal indicate. So add rows, grouping pictures almost 1–2 inches autonomously, to course a square or rectangle.
  4. One time y'all've plant a shape you similar, transfer it frame by frame to the wall.
  5. Another mode to find an system that is pleasing to the centre is to use paper outlines of the pieces you wish to hang; tape them to the wall to aid visualize culling arrangements and decide how you desire to proceed (see video above).
  6. To hang straight rows of frames—always a timeless and sophisticated option—employ string stretched between ii pushpins as a guide. You can also cull to use a light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation level to accomplish this. Brand sure to apply a level after hanging each frame to be certain each frame is direct earlier moving on to the next.
  7. Remember, multiple frames look best when arranged in a diamond, rectangular, or foursquare shape. Also, they should be spaced relatively tightly:1–two inches apart. A looser grouping tin piece of work for a more casual display.
  8. For stairwell displays, make sure you lot follow the upward angle of the steps. This can be made easier by using cord and pushpins or a laser level.

You might want to accept a wall-ornamentation-hanging buddy who can give yous feedback on the pattern as it takes shape! As a bonus, they can too help you lot make sure everything is level.

Creating a Dramatic Display: Hints for Heightening the Wow Factor of Your Photo Wall

Here are some tips for taking your design to the next level:

  • Choosing identical frame styles is a peachy way to make a powerful pattern argument. Matching frames, sizes, colors (of the pictures or frames), or textures is a manner to play with symmetry and bring your display together.
  • Mix it up, using a combination of shadow boxes and framed works. A mixture of textures and patterns is always pleasing to the middle (when done in moderation).
  • Have a focal point in your display. Its middle should be at eye level (66 inches off the ground is a good dominion of thumb).
  • Instead of one big organisation of photos, y'all could also create several groupings of smaller framed pictures that volition complement your piece of furniture and floor coverings.
  • Another option is producing the impression of a single dramatic prototype by framing like pictures or pieces of art (similar a series of abstract paintings) in similarly-sized frames and hanging them tightly together.
  • Wall color plays a large office in how photographs wait. Take a hint from museums and use a contrast colour to add together drama.
  • Pictures and/or artwork don't always have to be framed. You lot could hang unframed prints or pictures from a length of wire with clips for an anarchistic brandish.
  • If you tin can't or don't want to hang pictures, you could opt for placing pictures on a ledge, spacing them evenly, and staggering frame heights. You could even overlap a couple of the frames.
  • Apply frame risers to add depth to your display, bringing some photos forward off the wall.
  • People love stories. Line upwards framed pieces in chronological order to build a timeline of your growing child, a family holiday, or another important issue, and let your visitors connect the dots.
  • If y'all demand some more inspiration, this article from Pottery Barn has some overnice frame layouts for yous to consider.

Co-Blueprint in Activity

Carolyn (from the comments below) contacted me wanting some assistance creating a display of her girl's wedding pictures for her stairwell. I gave her some tips and she created a draw-up, almost to scale, of the number and size of frames she wanted to use.

When she had trouble tweaking it, she emailed the drawings to me for aid. I printed information technology out (it all fit on one page) and cut out all of the individual frames. And then I had some fun on my desk-bound moving them effectually and creating several potential designs.

I photographed each ane and emailed the pictures to her and she loved them. I repeated the process here so readers can see simply how easy it is to play effectually with ideas until you figure out which ane works for yous.

You can meet the pictures I sent to Carolyn below.

Questions & Answers

Question: I accept a long wall that my sofa is centered on. Some art is centered above my sofa. On each side, I have three feet. How exercise I fill up those bare spaces?

Answer: What typically works for your situation are a few things: yous tin can hang a prissy sconce on each side, or break up infinite with a alpine bookcase or even a flooring lamp. If you have side tables next to that sofa, you lot can place a couple of tall tabular array lamps on them, or a squeamish pot with alpine flowers or a found to somewhat fill up that infinite. Remember, open space is oftentimes good, it gives the optics a residue, and it doesn't have to exist the exact aforementioned thing on each side (unless information technology'southward sconces, of course, as they should match). My favorite choice is sconces if you're able to do that. I hope that I've answered information technology with a solution for you.

Question: What would be the best way to display five framed 8x10's and 2 4x6'due south on the wall?

Answer: It'southward hard to say without knowing things like what'due south around it and how large of a wall space is it; however, I feel similar 4x6's are pretty small-scale to be hanging on a wall so the best manner to do and so would be together with the larger frames on a floating shelf. There are a couple of examples above in the pictures with the blue background.

Question: My husband wants to hang 8x10 framed photos of each of our 3 daughter's school pictures going up our staircase. I am afraid it will wait cluttered and overwhelming if I vary the frame styles. Do you lot have any suggestions for how to make this project look archetype and equanimous? We have a very quondam business firm with a lot of aureate brown oak woodwork, so a more formal await would be improve.

Reply: 8x10 isn't very big so I don't think information technology'll be too cluttered. Every bit for the frames, if you want them to be different, which I thing would be nice, I would stick with the same frame colour. You could as well exercise the opposite and choose unlike analogous colors but I'd proceed the frame style the same. Promise this helps!

Question: Practice you take any easy ideas on how to display many of 8x10 sports photos?

Answer: Have a look at the 3rd thumbnail picture nether "More than Brandish Ideas for Your Wall!" - those are eight"x10" frames. Also, slightly above that, in that location's are some arrangement ideas with a blue background. The very lesser left picture is almost the same merely with some spacing in betwixt the frames. For your sports pictures, which are all the aforementioned size, I call back this kind of arrangement would piece of work best.

Question: I take a wall that measures 9'x9' and eight pictures that are 16"x20" each. How should I adapt my pictures on my wall?

Answer: For starters, I have to say that if there's a way to add another flick to your drove, it could be a much nicer limerick. That being said, you should actually bank check out the arrangements at the link provided in the article (https://www.potterybarn.com/tips-and-ideas/how-to-... If it must be 8 pictures, take a look at the last system case there, called "Centered." As all of the pictures are the same size, I would spread the outer iii on each side evenly. You won't accept a square, but if each side was a little college and an equal amount lower than the eye two, I believe you lot'd have a nice arrangement. Another option would be to do 2 rows of 4, evenly spaced.

Question: What would be the best brandish for 5x7 frames of vii grandchildren?

Reply: A random grouping or a level, a directly row would probably be best, but it greatly depends on the space you're trying to fill as well. In that location are several examples higher up in the article that you tin can await through to get ideas and inspiration.

Question: What is the all-time way to hang a movie that is 48' x 16" with 8x10's effectually it?

Answer: That will depend on a lot of things, really. Is the 48 x 16 hanging horizontal or vertical? How many 8 ten 10s? What does the wall look like - size?

Kari,

I know my response is quite late but for some reason I didn't become a notification of your bulletin, at least I don't remember getting one. Well, to answer your question, I don't know for sure the frame sizes, but I would venture a guess that at that place is a mix there of 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14 or even 12x16s.

With a freshly painted stairwell painted in a metallic bronze statue colour just like someone had posted in a picture to Pinterest, my hubby and I take at present shifted our attention to creating a display of photos on that wall. If you take a wait at the start prototype at the outset up above information technology shows my photograph wall and I accept two black & white canvases anchoring each end of the arangement. The canvases can be located anywhere in the system.

Nosotros are going to do white frames with both pics of family and nature. My question...tin we mix white frames and colour canvas prints? My mom just gave us a large colour canvas of our hymeneals day. I'd like to add that in with the other frames. Would this look proficient? Would it exist best to have two canvases and so the frames...to create a more balanced await? Thanks for your suggestions!

How-do-you-do Lily Rose. You might suppose that I love the outdoors more my relatives, therefore my photo drove of the former is quite substantial. My unmarried-story home has no stairways, but ten and 11 foot walls. So rather than arranging picture frames of relatives, I'm thinking about attaching rectangular, textile-covered frames to the walls with photo collages of the great outdoors.

My problem is figuring out where to start. A few pointers from experts on photo collages and displaying nature rather faces would exist quite helpful.

Lily Rose (writer) from A Coast on December 04, 2011:

Yes, Karry! If y'all await at the ready of pictures at the acme of this hub, the 1st, 3rd, and 6th pictures all include black and white pictures combined with color photos. Make the system cohesive with frames that are alike, or at to the lowest degree similar. The third movie (in the starting time set at the height) looks every bit if the frames are all different, only if you look advisedly they all accept gilt, wheather the frame colour or trim, and that makes them cohesive. Best of luck with your arrangement and thanks for visiting and the question.

Extremely happy to have finally displayed some family photo's on the landing in our house. I now accept my greatgrandmother, grandmother, mother and girl all as 'immature women' forth with a few other precious photos. And so thank you for helping me get started on this addiction .... going to do a more modernistic black and white display somewhere else in the house :)

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on July 24, 2011:

Hi Jennie - First of all I would say to make copies of your photos, don't use originals (unless you have them digitally stored and tin can reproduce at whatsoever fourth dimension) - not considering they'll get ruined for certain, but it's best to be safe.

To protect your photos from wearable you lot can do a couple of things. You can mat them (make your own uncomplicated mat - sparse or thick - out of cardstock or construction paper and tape the photo to the back side) and then clip the mat rather than the photo itself. Or if you're going to clip the photo itself you lot can line the within border of the clip with a small piece of felt or whatever other soft cloth to protect the photo. Definitely hang the photos in a location where the sun does not straight hit them or they will fade quickly with no protection from a frame.

I dear this wire hanging arrangement from Photojojo (a favorite site of mine): http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/magnetic-ph...

Check out this cool idea also at Photojojo: http://photojojo.com/shop/awesomeness/fotoclips/

Peruse their whole shop - they have some great stuff!

I hope this helps answer your question. Expert luck!

Jennie on July 21, 2011:

In this:

"Pictures or art don't ever have to exist framed. An anarchistic brandish could exist to hang unframed prints or pictures from a length of wire with clips."

I desire to try hanging pictures from the wire with clips, but I am worried almost them wearing.

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on July 20, 2011:

Jennie,

Thank y'all for your question ... I would love to help you but unfortunately I must ask you for description. I'g not sure I empathize what you're asking. Are you hanging picture FRAMES from a wire? Is it a trapeze-type display or do you hateful the frame has a wire beyond the back for hanging? Blazon of stop on the frame? Are you painting the frames or are you asking about the finish of something else? I'm sorry to enquire so many questions; I'm trying to empathise what you are asking me because I'1000 a fleck confused, sorry...

Jennie on July xx, 2011:

If I were to hang photos from a wire, what sort of finish would I do on them in lodge for them not to wear or tatter?

Lily Rose (author) from A Declension on July 13, 2011:

Hi Donna - Well, I'm having a difficult time picturing what you are explaining about accenting an system with this...In general, a film over a doorway is not the best placement because it's as well difficult to see. There are exceptions to hanging pictures not at eye level, but I'thou not sure higher up a doorway is one of them.

In my stance, the only affair that you lot can go away with is a painting/print over a doorway because that type of artwork doesn't have the details that one needs to see similar in a photograph. Also, artwork should only exist hung over a doorway when y'all take alpine ceilings and there's enough of space above the doorway (at least a couple of anxiety or more). I hope this helps!

Donna on July 12, 2011:

Thanks for your website. What are your views nearly putting a large framed photo over the doorway to accent arrangement on the connecting wall?

Lily Rose (author) from A Declension on July ten, 2011:

Cheers for the kind words. In that location really are so many ways you could go nigh creating a hymeneals memory wall or display - you actually could use whatever of the examples above.

That beingness said, since it is your daughter's nuptials and not your ain, my personal opinion would exist to avert overkill and select just your favorite few - maybe 6 or 7 at nigh.

You could also utilize a collage frame and be able to apply a lot more photos without it being overkill. Another option would be to use a multi-frame trapeze hanging system like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FHHAUQ/ref=as...

I hope this helps. Best wishes to yous and your daughter!!

Jeri - thanks for your comment and question. In re-reading the section that you're referring to I now realize that it'due south not very clear, is information technology? Sorry nigh that. What was meant by that really is kind of open to interpretation - beginning with three, or even ii, every bit your foundation. That foundation tin be either horizontal or vertical. Add as many as y'all like to the sides or height/bottom to create an overall square or rectangular shape. Traditionally, the eye of the arrangement should exist at "eye level", however, what is "okay" is actually up to y'all. I've seen rooms where framed photos are hung all over, floor to ceiling, and it looks peachy - do what feels and looks right to you I say considering you alive there and if at the end of the day it makes you smiling so you lot've washed a great job! I'1000 going to mail service a couple more pictures upward to a higher place in the section you're referring to that may aid you get the idea. I promise this helps!

Jeri on June 26, 2011:

Smashing ideas! On your graphic retangular picture you say to put 3 identical size frames in the center, I can't meet that on that brandish. Tin can you explicate what exactly you mean? On ane row, or on center of both rows, etc... And, if I do a foursquare on another wall how high or low is ok? I need to make the heart nigh 5ft. off ground?

Sunforged - cheers for visiting, and thanks for the kind words! I, too, beloved photos along the staircase walls - unfortunately my staircase is pretty open on both sides and so I tin can't practice it otherwise I would definitely do it like the moving-picture show above - I beloved how the organisation fifty-fifty wraps around the corner. I bet you lot're ammassing a decent amount of pictures of your new daughter! Thanks also for the great comment about the light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation level - so true! - I will perhaps give the hub a tweak to showcase it more equally you suggested.

@ Karen - glad to hear that; hope you have fun with the project!

Karen Motenko-Neal on Jan 17, 2011:

Thank you lot, Lily, for your fourth dimension and kind response. My ML did respond well to the all white.

sunforged from Sunforged.com on January 17, 2011:

Wow, your wall looks neat! neat organization, I really like the clever suggestion of using outlines to compose your arrangement, Im almost ashamed to never take idea of that!

I think my favorite location is upward the staircase, for some reason those collections of photos when well done, are very memorable for me, maybe since there is oft anything else to distract the eye?

I call up the laser hanger should exist showcased more, those are invaluable! they are super cheap and easy to use - just one use, if it saves yous from making i incorrect nail hole ..and it already pays for itself.Hanging lots of frames can exist frustrating even with traditional levels since older walls are often uneven. I should know I interned in a gallery. Readers, Go a laser level/light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation marker!

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on January 17, 2011:

In the outset set of photos (above), I love the third picture with the family photos all over the wall, only that would probably be idea of equally overwhelming! Take a look at the fifth photograph in that first set of photos - a very simple collage with everything framed in white frames with white mats. It not but gives a peaceful feeling just it'south easy on the eyes and non at all overwhelming. I retrieve mixing nature pics in with family pics would work beautifully. Now, on the other paw, using all unlike frames can give an arrangement the await and feel of information technology having been "collected" over time and that can exist calming, likewise. I promise that helps - expert luck with helping your MIL with her photograph displays and thank you for your comment!

Karen Motenko-Neal on January 17, 2011:

Your page is fix upwards beautifully and is helpful. Thank you.

Any more suggestions for helping to frame/display family unit photos without overwhelming, for my mother-in-law's apartment? She likes a quiet feel only loves her family and the photos. She also wants to hang nature photos that my husband shoots.

Thank you for your time.

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on January 17, 2011:

Jeff - commonly I would delete "spam" comments, just I checked out your site and I really like your concept a lot. Information technology's unlike and has a nice contemporary feel, albeit a trivial on the pricey side....but hey, for those who can beget information technology, it'due south definitely an choice in the running - thanks for visiting, Jeff.

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on January 07, 2011:

Absolutely - whatever makes you happy is what'south best. Of course, we're all concerned with what'south "right", as well, and so what I would recommend is to stick with either all color or all blackness & white for the photos and employ frames that are all in the same colour family (all black, or even dissimilar shades of brown/wood tone, or whatever color goes best with your décor.) Go alee and throw a framed quote in the mix, only proceed it minimal so as not to throw off the overall photo display. Promise this helps!

Ann on January 06, 2011:

Is is okay to brandish in a group a wide variety of pictures such equally schoolhouse photos, Christmas photos, family photos as well every bit a favorite quote?

Lily Rose (author) from A Declension on January 05, 2011:

Pammac - I think you lot could definitely do what you desire using some of the big arrangements shown higher up. Check out the offset set of pictures at the top of the hub and look at the first, second, third and sixth pictures. Also look at the third moving picture down titled "graphic rectangular photo wall display" - you lot can combine the school photos with other family photos easily, only make a indicate to hang the schoolhouse pictures chronologically from left to right. They don't have to exist in a direct line...promise that helps!

Pammac on January 05, 2011:

Good information, Thanks! This is my claiming... I would similar to hang my children'southward 8X10 class pictures up in my 12 foot hallway along with other sized pictures of the family, ect.. I would like the class photos in chronological lodge just still want it to be interesting and also add together the other pics in to the mix. I accept wanted to do this for 2 years now and don't know where to start. I wait forward to hearing your ideas. Thanks!

practice u have a bigger image of the 2nd blue paradigm of photo frame arrangements? I clicked on it but it's not that clear. please answer at lovingchimera@yahoo.com

Danielle on November 08, 2010:

Fantabulous, thanks both!

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on Nov 07, 2010:

Hi Danielle - I would suggest an organization in which the frames are hung either together (edges touching) or very close together in a tight display. If yous take a narrow space, depending on the room, it could look very cool to hang your frames almost flooring to ceiling. Some other option is to hang several picture shelves from top to bottom on your wall and place the frames on the shelves - it may requite y'all more options to rearrange/add/remove/change your overall display. I hope this helps!

Danielle on November 07, 2010:

Swell ideas, I have alot of 8x10 photos and fiddling wall room any suggestions? I don't accept a stairwell.

I really appreciate the large wall arrangement of animals (picture one). I have such challenges with the spacing and design. Would you happen to accept frame sizes, mat sizes (and opening sizes) and spacing betwixt the frames for the "nice photo wall arrangement for a large wall when you accept a lot of frames to hang" picture?

I noticed you lot shared the sizes with someone above several months ago. My e-mail is karacassani@yahoo.com.

Hello there, just visited from the forum, asking for a bit of help, what I tin see is, that the photos right at the top ideally should be nether your commencement text module, so that the adsense ads characteristic prominently at the top so on each subsequent text module, you might practice best adding an amazon widget at the side of each text module.

You can come across why yous get a good corporeality of traffic to this folio, it's well written and with some good photos.

Are you using Ebay?

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on June xiv, 2010:

Hi Rachel. Actually, that dramatic brandish is a collection of 24 private unproblematic white frames hung closely together. That would be absurd if you could find a prepare made collage frame that big! Instead of trying to get them hung so close together, consider somehow attaching them together with nails or screws earlier hanging them. Good luck and cheers for visiting!

Rachael on June 14, 2010:

Where did yous become the picture show of the frame next to the title "Create a Dramatic Display" - I would Honey to have that frame in my house!!

Lily Rose (author) from A Coast on June 03, 2010:

CyFree - I'm glad I could help! I retrieve a large collection of unlike styled frames, as long as they're hung in some sort of cohesive manner, tin brand a wonderful eclectic wall display, so go for it! Just lay information technology all out on the floor starting time and that'll really give you the best way to meet what it would look similar on the wall and allows you to edit and rearrange before making whatever commitments with nails!
